Meet John Stegner

John Stegner is a lifelong Idahoan raised in Grangeville, former Latah County District Judge, and former Idaho Supreme Court Justice, whose career has been defined by service, responsibility, and a commitment to the Constitution.

John is known throughout Idaho for his work pioneering drug and treatment courts - specialized courts that enable people to escape drug addiction and become contributing members of society, while simultaneously decreasing the costs of incarceration paid by taxpayers. Throughout his 26-year judicial career, he earned a reputation for thoughtful decision-making, constitutional integrity, and the willingness to stand by his convictions.

John is running for Governor because he is frustrated by the state of politics in Idaho, and believes Idaho needs leaders who represent Idahoans.

Standing on Principle

Throughout my career, I've made decisions based on the Constitution, the facts, and what I believed was right. Not political pressure.

Sometimes doing the right thing means standing alone, apart from others. But leadership isn't about doing what's easy; it's about doing what's right.

As Governor, I'll bring that same commitment to serving the people of Idaho.

Why I’m Running

Across our state, families are asking if they can afford to stay here, build a career, raise a family, and access the healthcare and opportunities they need. For many, the answer is no. We have the highest grocery tax in the country. We have the highest incarceration rate of women in the country. We are creating systems that prevent Idahoans from thriving because too many of our elected officials have stopped representing the people of Idaho. They ignore the rule of law and pretend following the Constitution is optional.

I spent my entire career upholding the Constitution. It’s a responsibility I carried as a judge and as a Justice on the Idaho Supreme Court, and why I am running for Governor. I am not a career politician and I am not affiliated with a party. I answer to the people.

Issues

Affordability

Families should be thriving in our state, not struggling to make ends meet. Idahoans didn’t create the affordability crisis, but they deserve a governor focused on fixing it.
Healthcare Access

Idaho families deserve access to quality healthcare. We must address the challenges facing our healthcare system and strengthen access across our state.
Education & Opportunity

Every Idaho family should have confidence that the next generation can build a future here and pursue opportunities close to home. We have an obligation to properly fund our public schools.
Public Lands

Retaining and maintaining public ownership of Idaho’s public lands isn’t optional; it’s the point of public lands. Idaho isn’t for sale.
Water Rights

Inaction over Idaho’s water shortage has Idaho families and farmers paying the price. We need long-term solutions that ensure we protect this vital resource.
Data Centers

Future growth should serve Idahoans, and if it doesn’t, it should go elsewhere. Idaho families should get to decide whether or not data centers get built in their neighborhoods, not billion-dollar companies and their shareholders.
Constitutional Leadership

Government exists to serve the people—not the other way around. Upholding the Constitution and protecting individual rights must remain at the center of leadership.
Strong Communities

Strong communities are built by strong families, local leadership, and a government that listens to the people it serves.
